Bay Bridge - Transition Span Lift

Part of design team for lifting and installation of 200 foot long transition span between the skyway and the self-anchoring suspension span of the new Bay Bridge. Transition span was 1,700 tons and was lifted 200 feet in the air, over water.

 

  • Developed lift plans to lift into place an enormous steel section of the Bay Bridge weighing over 1,700 tons. The 200-foot by 85-foot transition span is a steel box girder bridge segment that will carry 5 lanes of eastbound traffic. This lift was the largest in CalTrans history.

  • Responsible for designing eastide cantilevered lift system consisting of (4) 365 ton hydraulic strand jacks. 

  • Created 2D CAD drawings of fabrication drawings for support girders.
